“Gradually, without really thinking about it, Hepsiba and I began playing together at home. It wasn’t a conscious decision; it was something that arose naturally from our relationship as brother and sister. Our performances together didn’t begin because we decided to do so,” Menuhin himself wrote. The Menuhin siblings performed in front of an audience for the first time when Efdi was 18 and Hepzibah was 14. Although their performances together were forced to be interrupted several times for various reasons, they continued until Hepzibah’s death on New Year’s Day 1981. Their recording of Beethoven’s most famous and technically demanding violin sonata, the “Kreutzer,” is a lively, beautiful, and songful performance brimming with freshness—truly befitting teenagers. As for the “No. 7” Sonata, the shadows are emphasized, and the slow movement possesses great depth. It is clear from this performance that, in 1938 when they recorded this piece, the young Menuhin siblings had already firmly established their reputation and were brimming with confidence.
