Description:
Tito Skipa (1888–1965) began his musical career as a composer before transitioning to a career as a professional singer. After making his opera debut in 1910 as Alfredo in *La Traviata*, he performed in countless productions throughout Europe. In 1919, he joined the Civic Opera in Chicago and remained active there until his debut at the Metropolitan Opera in New York in 1932. Skipa, who stood out at the time as a “tenor di grazia,” possessed a clear, resonant voice with exquisite sweetness. Skipa’s smooth and light singing was particularly well-suited to Rossini, Bellini, and Donizetti, and surpassed that of anyone of his time or later generations. He was also a rare find among lyric tenors for his ability to express fervent emotion and passion. This CD is the first release in a two-disc complete collection of Skipa’s early Victor recordings, featuring his outstanding singing from his younger days. 8.110332
