That CD is the epitome of authenticity—the very essence of the main lineage. Compared to that, so-called ‘remastered’ CDs might be like dubious clones. After all, they are nothing more than recordings taken from one of the thousands of LPs that anyone could buy—without even going back to the original master tapes—and then adjusted. But the sound is excellent. The sense of three-dimensionality, depth, and vivid realism—the sound that engineer Mark Overt-Thorne extracted from the grooves is truly delightful. “I’ll admit, with some embarrassment, that I never really understood Knaepertsbusch’s 1951 recording until now. It used to sound drawn-out to me. But I was wrong.” The vivid sound quality he raves about is also particularly noteworthy. Producer’s Note by Mark Obert-Thorn This recording of Knaepertsbusch’s *Parsifal* was produced by editing together several performances given at the Bayreuth Festival in July and August 1951. Since Decca was not yet fully accustomed to working with magnetic tape as a medium at that time, while the sound balance is decent and the atmosphere is clear, variations in perspective and audience noise are noticeable in certain sections. The original master has other issues as well. For example, in Act II, there is added reverberation during Kundry’s octave leap, and in the bass section at the beginning of Act II, there is noise likely caused by improper azimuth adjustment (adjustment of the relative angle between the tape head and the magnetic tape). Neither of these could be corrected. However, we were able to correct the pitch drop at the end of Act III (which had been a troublesome issue on the reissued LPs of this recording), and we were also able to restore the string sounds immediately following the appearance of the Knights of the Holy Grail in the same act—sounds that had been omitted without explanation on some LPs.
