Description:

Bernstein was the first American conductor of international stature and a great composer. As a composer, Bernstein has been hailed as "the greatest American composer of the 20th century" for his serious symphonies, musicals, experimental music, and jazz, including "West Side Story," which incorporates the "Jewish" spirit of his own roots. As a conductor, Bernstein was appointed Music Director of the New York Philharmonic in 1958, expanding the orchestra's repertoire and captivating audiences with his charisma and passionate playing, and he made numerous recordings for CBS Records. In 1969, he resigned as Music Director of the New York Philharmonic. While making guest appearances with orchestras around the world, she also devoted herself to teaching younger musicians and nurtured a number of students, including Orsop, Seiji Ozawa, Yutaka Sado, and Michael Tilson Thomas. This box contains masterful performances by Bernstein's favorite pupil, Marin Allsop, and CDs 1 through 6 are a compilation of previously released Allsop recordings, while CDs 7 and 8 contain new recordings, including world premiere recordings. The accompanying DVD includes a documentary film by Georg Wübold. Including the treasured footage, you can see "Thoughts on Bernstein" as told by Bernstein's children and a wide variety of musicians who were associated with him. This moving documentary offers an intimate taste of Bernstein's humanity and the appeal of his music. Leonard Bernstein was a thinker, a teacher, a writer, a TV star, an agitator, a humanitarian, and a hero to me. Like all true leaders, Bernstein taught me more than just how to conduct.Furthermore, he showed me, as well as the rest of the world, the immense power of music and the importance of sharing this power, along with a very rich humanity. He also showed me that "classical music" has the power not only to move people, but also to change their lives. He lived by that belief... Marin Allsop, Naxos Japan
