For this generous and unconventional composer, the symphonic form may not have been the best fit. But that is precisely what makes it so interesting. His bursts of inspiration clash with the form, and sometimes transcend the form, creating a world that is uniquely his own. Listening to all the symphonies (actually 11 symphonies due to the loss of the score of No. 5), we can see what he meant by symphony. What exactly was a symphony for him? What did he struggle with and what did he try to achieve? The complete symphonic works of Villa-Lobos, a must-listen for those who want to know more about the composer, are finally released! [Conductor and President of the Villa-Lobos Society of Japan, Yusuke Kimoto]Aitor Villa-Lobos has been described as "the most important creative contributor to Brazilian art music in the 20th century. He left many works in a style that combines classical techniques with Brazilian folk music, and his 11 symphonies are particularly unique among them.While the influence of French music, which was his main interest at the time, can be felt in Symphony No. 1, the symphonies from Symphony No. 2 onward are full of the enthusiasm and lyricism characteristic of Brazilian music. Symphonies No. 3 through No. 5 were commissioned by the Brazilian government to commemorate the end of World War I. Unfortunately, the score for No. 5, titled "Peace," has been lost.
