Description:
Sergei Taneyev is a leading figure in Russian music of the 19th and 20th centuries. He studied under Nikolai Rubinshtein and Pyotr Tchaikovsky at the Moscow Conservatory, and after graduating, he worked as a pianist and composer, as well as teaching younger students at his alma mater, the Moscow Conservatory. He trained Rachmaninoff, Scriabin, Prokofiev, and Metonel. This album contains the complete symphonies conducted by Thomas Sanderling, as well as orchestral works and cantatas. It traces the development of the composer's style from his early works, which show the influence of Romanticism, to his last symphony, the Fourth Symphony, which became a large-scale masterpiece. Also included is the huge overture "Oresteia," which has the air of a symphonic poem, the "Concerto Suite," Taneyev's first work for violin and orchestra, and the cantata "St. Ioan Damascene (John of Damascus)," which is richly woven with ancient chants. The album offers a full taste of Taneyev, who has been called the "Russian Brahms" because of his ability to construct works with precision and skillful use of counterpoint. Naxos Japan
