Description:
The term “Baroque” is said to derive from a Portuguese word meaning “irregular pearl.” It first appeared in the 18th century as a term used to criticize architecture characterized by excessive ornamentation, and in music, it is said to refer to works featuring “dramatic emotional expression.” However, the Baroque music you can hear here doesn’t quite seem to fit that definition, and many people likely think of Baroque music as “elegant pieces performed at court,” don’t they? This is likely due to the strong influence of works like Telemann’s “Table Music” and Handel’s “Water Music”; by actually listening to these pieces, you’ll come to realize that, overall, Baroque music is by no means merely elegant. Indeed, Vivaldi’s “Summer,” for example, is quite intense music, and while not included here, one can sense breathtaking emotional fluctuations in the vocal works of Vivaldi and Hasse. Naxos Japan
