A symphony is defined as “a large-scale musical composition consisting of multiple movements and performed by an orchestra.” It originated in 17th-century Italy as an evolution of the “sinfonia,” which served as an overture to operas. The three-part form of the Italian overture—"fast-slow-fast"—served as the basis for sonata form, which gradually evolved and took on its general shape during the Classical period. It was during this era that Haydn, known as the “Father of the Symphony,” emerged. He composed as many as 104 symphonies, laying a solid foundation for the genre. Mozart also composed more than 40 symphonies, and every work from No. 30 onward is a masterpiece. His Symphony No. 25 saw a surge in popularity after being used to great effect in the film *Amadeus*. Many people likely feel a sense of excitement just from hearing the opening section, which sounds as if it’s being driven by some urgent force. It was Beethoven who revolutionized the symphonic form. While his First and Second Symphonies were written according to established conventions, he introduced various innovations—such as including a “Funeral March” in the second movement of his Third Symphony and using a chorus in the final movement of his Ninth. This trend expanded even further during the Romantic era, and the symphony began to display an ever-wider range of expressions. Naxos Japan
