Ryoichi Fujimori & NHK Symphony Orchestra Musicians / Cello Quartet Collection Recorded digitally in 2000. Ryoichi Fujimori, principal cellist of the NHK Symphony Orchestra—who has previously released recordings of Kodály’s and Bach’s unaccompanied works, as well as a collection of lyrical miniatures with Corey—joins forces with three fellow NHK Symphony musicians with whom he shares a close rapport for this album. In addition to Thomas-Mifune’s well-received arrangement of “Air on the G String,” which showcases the cello’s charm, and Varga’s arrangement of the “Chaconne” (Varga was formerly principal cellist of the NYPO), the album features the “Concert Polonaise” by the renowned cellist Popper, a superb arrangement for cello quartet of Schumann’s “Cello Concerto,” “Two Pieces” by the Belgian composer Jongen, and Krenkel’s “Four Pieces”—whose “Hymn” is so famous—all of which beautifully convey the charm of the cello ensemble. The program concludes with *Song of the Birds*, arranged by Fujimori himself and presented as an encore—a truly gem of a performance.
