A superb project by Klaus Silde—a former president of the Berlin University of the Arts and a pianist with a well-established reputation as a scholar and educator. The “Music Book” that Bach compiled for his second wife, Anna Magdalena, contains many pieces that have been incorporated into his other works, as well as compositions by others—including his own sons—and has rarely been recorded in its entirety until now. This project features all the pieces from Volumes 1 and 2—spanning two CDs each—with the exception of the organ piece “Those Who Entrust Themselves to God’s Providence” (BWV 691), which is included in Volume 2. French Suites Nos. 1–5; BWV Anh. 114 (Vol. 2, Disc 1, Track 14), famously known as “Bach’s Minuet”; and the aria from the “Goldberg Variations”—this series offers a rich listening experience that distills the very essence of Bach. The vocal works featured on Disc 2 of Volume 2 include performances by an all-star lineup of singers, such as Toshiro Gorobe. The crystal-clear sound achieved through single-point recording is also worth noting.
