Adrian Boult, London Philharmonic Orchestra

Description:

For the first time on SACD: four supreme works from the session recordings left behind by Adrian Boult—the foremost authority on Elgar—with the London Philharmonic Orchestra! Newly remastered from the original analog master tapes in the UK specifically for this release. Includes a new liner note by Kenichi Mizukoshi, representative of the Elgar Society of Japan Among the recordings by Adrian Boult (1889–1983)—who, as the “orthodox” heir and interpreter of Elgar, left behind numerous performances that embodied his own vision—these four works, renowned as his finest recordings, are now available on SACD for the first time! Although Bolt made multiple recordings of the same piece, each one has earned a solid reputation. This reissue features Elgar’s representative works, all recorded with the London Philharmonic Orchestra. The two symphonies feature recordings from his final sessions between 1975 and 1976, while “Pomp and Circumstance” includes recordings from 1976 and 1977. Of the two stereo versions of the “Enigma Variations,” this release features the 1961 recording (The 1970 recording with the London Symphony Orchestra was previously released as part of this series.) For this release, we used a master digitized at 192 kHz/24-bit from the original analog master tapes in the UK, and mastered the SACD and CD layers separately. Includes new liner notes. This is a collection for permanent preservation. There is no doubt that all of the Elgar performances left behind by Boldt are not only part of our historical heritage but also serve as the definitive guide to Elgar interpretation even today. Furthermore, even for the same piece, he left behind multiple recordings dating back to the monaural era; these reveal different interpretations depending on the era and location. Thanks to recent releases such as the Warner complete monaural and stereo collections, we now live in an era where we can compare and enjoy these recordings more widely. While Bolt left behind numerous masterful recordings, this project has also been tracing his legacy by reissuing “Brahms: Complete Symphonies” (released in 2018; TDSA72), “Vaughan Williams: Complete Symphonies” (released in 2022; TDSA225), the two versions of “The Planets” from the stereo era onward (released in 2023; TDSA288 and 289), as well as reissuing two albums of concerto accompaniments, we have been tracing Vault’s remarkable legacy.
