The Ébène String Quartet’s recording project *Around the World*, conceived to commemorate the 250th anniversary of Beethoven’s birth in 2020, was an extremely ambitious endeavor to record the complete Beethoven string quartets live in seven cities (Philadelphia, Vienna, Tokyo, São Paulo, Melbourne, Nairobi, and Paris). In June 2026, the Ébène String Quartet will perform Beethoven’s complete string quartets as part of the 40th-anniversary concert series at Suntory Hall. To commemorate their visit to Japan, a Japanese edition featuring a carefully curated selection of popular pieces from the complete set of string quartets will be released! It includes the Rasumovsky Quartets and No. 13 (with the Great Fugue), recorded in Vienna and Tokyo. Nos. 7 and 8 were recorded in Vienna, the city of music, resulting in a recording that uniquely captures the Ébène Quartet’s blend of lyrical expression and dynamic energy. Nos. 9 and 13 (with the Great Fugue) are live recordings from Suntory Hall, the venue for their 2026 Japan tour. One might say that the performance was further refined by the intense focus characteristic of Japanese audiences. (C)RS
