Description:
Kurt Sanderling's superb performance of the Great Garage is now available on SACD for the first time! This is one of the best performances of this piece, rich in romance and evocative of the eternal flow of time. This is the seventh digital recording to be released on SACD! New commentary included! In 1956, when he was the conductor of the Leningrad Philharmonic Orchestra, Sanderling recorded this piece for the DG label in Berlin, and it remains one of the most popular recordings of the time. This 1989 TELDEC recording, the first re-recording since then, is characterized by a more mature content while maintaining the same basic approach to the work, and has a strong impact on fans of the piece as a recording that shows the unique interpretation of this work with its rich romanticism. The slow tempo is part of this. The slow tempo is also a part of this, and the flowing musical delivery, which never slackens, is the most characteristic feature of this performance. The SACD version has been mastered separately from the SACD and CD layers. New commentary is included. His approach to Russian music during his conducting career in the former Soviet Union can be heard in his recording of Tchaikovsky's Symphony No. 4 with the Leningrad Philharmonic Orchestra (monaural recording on DG), his later recording with the Berlin Symphony Orchestra of Symphonies Nos. 4-6 (DENON), his recording with ETERNA of Rachmaninoff's complete piano concertos with Peter Rösel, and his recording of Shostakovich's complete piano works with the Berlin Philharmonic Orchestra (DENON). The depth of his knowledge and affinity for Shostakovich can be heard in many of his recordings, including the complete concerto cycle and a series of Shostakovich recordings, all of which can be characterized as performances with a low center of gravity and gravitas. The same is true of Rachmaninoff, with the exception of Symphony No. 2, of which there are live recordings of Symphony No. 3, but not many session recordings have been re-recorded. The 1989 TELDEC recording was made more than 40 years later, and the fact that it was made with the Philharmonia Orchestra, to which he was appointed principal guest conductor and then honorary conductor, may be one reason for the high degree of perfection of the performance. This recording is characterized by a long playing time of approximately 67 minutes overall, although there are some cuts, but the performance is substantial, and the long passage of time is rather irreplaceable for those who love this music. For all its amplitude, there is no element of pacing; on the contrary, the carrying of the sound becomes more layered, giving the long-breathed melody even more charm. It is a marvelous thing, and there is no other performance of this piece that is so bold. In any case, there is no doubt that this is one of Sanderling's best-known recordings, in addition to the two later works by Mahler and others recorded on ERATO. This time, the best mastering available today has been done on the original masters, with the aim of achieving a sound quality that enables a more precise grasp of Sanderling's intentions. (1/2)
