Description:
A collection of all two albums that Kurt Sanderling left on the ERATO label in his later years. Shostakovich was also released on the 50th anniversary of his death. Both works are his specialty, and their large scale is remarkable! This is the first SACD release! The seventh SACD release of digital recordings! New commentary included! Two of Kurt Sanderling's masterpieces suddenly recorded on the ERATO label in 1992 and 1991, the last years of his conducting career, are collected in this 2-CD set. The Mahler performance is on a larger scale than the earlier 1979 recording, and the Philharmonia Orchestra's high functionality is also clearly demonstrated, making this one of the most representative recordings of the late Kurt Sanderling. In the commercial version, Mahler's 4th movement was recorded at the beginning of DISC2, but this time all the pieces are included in each DISC. Shostakovich is also re-recorded, but this recording is a final response to the master's repeated performances of No. 15, and the persuasive interpretation that unravels the essence of the piece is unique to Sanderling. The mastering was done separately for the SACD layer and the CD layer, and a new commentary is included. New commentary is included. Mahler previously recorded with the Berlin Symphony Orchestra for ETERNA in 1979, and this 1992 recording is a re-recording. There are few Mahler recordings by Sanderling, and the only session recordings left are this one and the Berlin Symphony Orchestra's recordings of No. 9 and "Song of the Earth," No. 10 (Cook version), and "Song of the Wandering Young Man" (the three symphonies are on a SACD hybrid of a Tower project on a different label, 0301191BC, which was reissued from the original German analog master tapes in 2018). The only live performances were probably of these three symphonies and the Fourth (recorded live with the BBC Philharmonic Orchestra in 1978). Live recordings were made of the North German Radio Symphony Orchestra in 1987, No. 9 with the BBC Philharmonic Orchestra in 1982, and "Song of the Earth" with the BBC Philharmonic Orchestra in 1988. Unlike other conductors, the symphonies are mainly from Mahler's last years, which is unusual, and it is also valuable that he included No. 10 (Cook's version) in his repertoire. This 1989 recording has the same basic interpretation as the 1979 recording and other live performances, but the session recording has made it more precise. With a high-functioning orchestra, the performance is the final answer to this piece, with a thorough interpretation of Sanderlinck's work. In terms of stance, this is a performance that interprets the score objectively from a musical standpoint, without being carried away by emotion. In this sense, it is a legitimate performance, and while "hot" performances were popular at the time of its release, this "cool" performance may deserve attention once again. (1/2)
