Description:
This is the only recording of Rachmaninoff's "Rachmaninoff No. 3" and "Pictures at an Exhibition" performed together with Bernstein. Newly reissued at 192kHz/24bit from the original analog master tapes in Japan for this release. New commentary included. First SACD release! In addition to the buzz surrounding the collaboration between Weissenberg and Bernstein, who were both active at the forefront as virtuoso pianists, the second recording of "Rachmaninoff's 3rd" is the latest reissue of a rare performance that beautifully blends technique and romanticism! This disc, recorded together in 1979, is a performance that should be remembered for a long time as a masterpiece that highlights not only the technique but also the high musicality of the two musicians. The "Bells" is also a masterpiece! In addition to the original recording, this reissue includes "Pictures at an Exhibition" recorded in 1971 & 1972. The master was digitized at 192kHz/24bit from the original analog master tapes in Japan and mastered separately on SACD and CD layers for this release. New commentary is included. This is a permanent preservation disc.Alexis Weissenberg (1929-2012) became more internationally renowned after making his Paris debut in 1966 after a 10-year absence, and began his career as a virtuoso pianist who could compete with the great pianists of the former Soviet Union, especially those who were still at the forefront of their craft. He began his career as a virtuoso pianist. In terms of recording history, he performed with Karajan and his recordings of Tchaikovsky's Piano Concerto No. 1, Rachmaninoff's Piano Concerto No. 2, and Beethoven's complete piano concertos (which he performed with Karajan and the BPO when they visited Japan) were worldwide hits, and he was a very popular pianist at the time. In addition to the above pieces, he also had technically difficult pieces in his repertoire. The album (Prêtre & Chicago Symphony Orchestra) recorded on the RCA label in 1969 is still amazing to listen to today. It is a performance that is on par with Horowitz's. If you are a fan of this music, you must have heard this performance at least once.Ten years later, Weissenberg and Bernstein made a re-recording of the piece in Paris, and while the recording is not overly dynamic, the performance is characterized by an evolution in a sense, with more attention paid to the inner workings of the piece and a more focused performance of the key points of the piece. Even though the tempo is somewhat Bernstein-guided, it conveys the point that Weissenberg wanted to make in the re-recording. The EMI recording of the late analog period had sounded thin on CD, but the latest reissue has a high-resolution sound quality that makes Weissenberg's firm hitting even more impressive. The latest reissue of the CD also features a high-resolution version, which makes Weissenberg's solid hitting even more impressive. (1/2)
