Description:
<The 1966 recording with the New Philharmonia Orchestra for the former EMI is newly reissued from the original analog master tape. A historical masterpiece that shines with passion and sincerity in his conducting. Excellent recording. New commentary is included for the 40th anniversary of Boult's death. In 2024, the 150th anniversary of Holst's birth and the 90th anniversary of his death, two stereo recordings of "The Planets" made by Barthes on the old EMI label are newly digitized and mastered. This is the 1966 album with the New Philharmonia Orchestra, a disc that has long been overshadowed by the later 1978 recording, but it is an attractive performance that burns faintly inside while maintaining a sincere attitude in keeping with the essence of the music. Also, please enjoy the differences in sound quality and performance depending on the time of recording and differences in the orchestra. The master was digitized at 192kHz/24bit from the original analog master tapes in the country of origin for this release, and mastered separately for the SACD and CD layers. New commentary is included. This is a permanent preservation disc. The Planets" will be reissued in 2023, 40 years after Boult's death, and in 2024, 150 years after Holst's birth and 90 years after his death (the 1978 recording (TDSA289) will also be reissued at the same time). This is one of the most famous masterpieces in the UK. It is rare to reissue the same piece at the same time, but on this occasion, we have decided to reissue both recordings at the same time, as they share many common elements, and thus, the conditions for reissuing them are the same. These two "Planets" recordings, especially the last one from 1978, have been reissued many times even in the CD era, and both recordings are available on SACD. The 1966 recording with the New Philharmonia Orchestra was made shortly after the 1959 recording with the Vienna Opera Orchestra, and was notable as a recording by Boult with his home orchestra in the stereo era. At that time, the New Philharmonia Orchestra had only been reorganized by Klemperer less than two years earlier, and there were concerns about its management, but many of the best players had taken over from the Philharmonia Orchestra, and overall, the performance was of a high level.Although there are not many recordings with Boult, he recorded Vaughan Williams' Symphony No. 6 in 1968, and recorded two more symphonies with the London Philharmonic Orchestra to complete the complete symphony cycle (reissued as TDSA225 by this project in 2022). The 1978 recording was made with Christopher Parker as the engineer, and the 1978 recording was made with Christopher Bishop, which is another interesting difference. The only other differences are the orchestra and the age of the recordings, so it is interesting to compare the recordings, including the subtle differences in Boult's interpretation. Of course, they are not necessarily in the same condition, but I don't think there is any other example that comes so close in terms of simultaneous state-of-the-art digitization and mastering. We hope you will listen to both. In addition, we have added a coupling track. Vaughan Williams' masterpieces, and these are also part of the highly acclaimed vault's important legacy. (1/2)
