The ensemble—a standard string quartet augmented by a viola and a cello—exudes a calm beauty amidst its youthful brightness, allowing listeners to enjoy a sound that is quintessentially Brahms. The Second String Sextet, composed five years later, is said to incorporate the name of one of his former lovers, and is a work that demands a high level of ensemble skill from each performer. This performance is a live recording from the 2016 Aix-en-Provence Music Festival, featuring the Capuçon brothers—two of France’s leading instrumentalists who usually pursue separate careers—performing together for the first time in a long while, alongside the musicians surrounding them. They present one of Brahms’s most popular chamber music works.
