Two "Pathetique" recordings from 1937 and 1941, restored to their original perfection. Japan’s world-renowned dedication to restoration has borne fruit! These extremely rare recordings are finally being reissued! It was once a sensational revelation when it was announced that Mengelberg’s legendary “Pathetique” recordings were actually a mix of source material from 1937 and 1941. Now, after a long wait, this historic CD set—famous for being produced by Nobuhiko Kori—is finally being reissued! This CD reissue revives the authentic sound of the 1937 recording for the first time (using previously unreleased master tapes from Japan Telefunken) and features an extremely rare CD reissue based on the 1941 SP recordings—of which only two sets existed in Japan at the time. It is said that while this 1937 recording was chosen as the first recording for German Telefunken, the performance—which had been tailored to fit the recording time of an SP record—did not satisfy Mengelberg, leading to a re-recording in 1941. This performance—which returns to the original tempo, particularly in the fourth movement (making it about one minute longer), and features improved sound quality—can be considered Mengelberg’s definitive recording. Together with the booklet containing a detailed account of the background by Nobuhiko Kori, this is a set worthy of preservation for future generations. It also includes two String Serenades (Metal Mother & SP), the “1812 Overture,” Tchaikovsky’s Symphony No. 5 and Piano Concerto No. 1 with the BPO (two versions of the same performance, likely recorded on different equipment), this set contains all of Mengelberg’s Tchaikovsky recordings for Telefunken.
