This long-awaited compilation collects all of the material from the Viscaynes era (61-62), which was the first step in Sly Stone's illustrious career. The Viscaynes were a mixed male/female chorus group that Sly formed in high school, and their three singles include an unreleased track with Sly on lead vocals, a single produced by George Mottola and released under the name Danny Stuart, and a single by a white pop singer whom Sly looked up to as his mentor. Sly's first collaboration with Gary Stites, a white pop singer and songwriter for the Viscaynes, and a single by Richard Berry, known for "Louie Louie," released under the name Jasper Woods with the Viscaynes backing him, are among the 19 tracks on this album. Until now, Sly's sound sources from this period have been unfairly evaluated by some reissues claiming to be a collection of his early recordings, as they contain wrong songs, but this album has been remastered from newly discovered tapes under the supervision of Sly Stone himself, and the historical value and content of the album are perfect.
