Marco Bellocchio’s Shocking Feature Debut Revived in a 4K Restored Version
This is the feature-length debut released at age 26 by master filmmaker Marco Bellocchio, who—alongside Bernardo Bertolucci and others—has been a leading force in contemporary Italian cinema. For this film, Berlocchio was highly acclaimed for his sharp critique of the bourgeois family values and Catholic morality prevalent in Italy at the time, winning the Silver Leopard (Best New Director) at the Locarno International Film Festival and the Silver Ribbon Award from the Italian Film Journalists Association. Furthermore, the film’s incorporation of themes such as caring for a family member with a disability and financial struggles within the family offered a glimpse into the artistic style of Beroccio, who would go on to direct numerous socially conscious works such as *Good Evening, My Love* (2003) and *Sleeping Beauty* (2012), making this a significant work. The lead role is played by Lou Castel. Following his starring role in this film, he continued to appear in a wide range of productions, from the spaghetti western *The Bandits Who Tear Through the Wilderness* (1966) to the French film *The Birth of Love* (1993), directed by Philippe Garrel. The score was composed by Ennio Morricone, who had only recently begun composing film scores. This is the first-ever Blu-ray release in Japan, featuring the latest 4K restored master. It includes a special booklet with commentary on the film as a bonus feature.
