Ivan IV, known as the "Thunder Emperor," fought against the tyranny of foreign enemies and aristocrats in medieval Russia. Sergei Eisenstein, known as the "father of cinematic technique," adapted his turbulent life to film on an overwhelming scale. This is a historical masterpiece that pursues the thorough stylistic beauty of acting by incorporating pictorial compositions and Kabuki gestures into the performance. Part I" evokes cinematic excitement with a touch of dynamism, while "Part II" reveals the brutal and lonely character of Ivan, who eventually turns into a tyrant out of suspicion. The screening of "Part II" was banned because it was considered to be implicitly critical of Stalin, the ruler of the time. It was not released until 1958, after Eisenstein's death. Part 2" features a partial color section, and its spectacular color design and perfectly crafted compositions showcase some of Eisenstein's new experiments in film theory. HD mastered DVD with 2K restoration restored in 2014! A commentary booklet is included as a bonus.
