Description:

Furtwängler returned to the Salzburg Festival for the first time after the war and conducted the Vienna Philharmonic Orchestra in the "Bra 1". In August 1947, Furtwängler returned to the Salzburg Festival for the first time after the war after being cleared of war crimes, and gave historic performances of "Rural" and "Destiny" at the subscription concert with the Berlin Philharmonic in May. On August 13, he conducted the Vienna Philharmonic Orchestra and chose Brahms' First Symphony, his 18th symphony, as the closing piece. The maestro was in high spirits, and his performance was dramatic, spectacular, and white-hot as he prepared for the raging finale. The Vienna Philharmonic showed a tension-filled ensemble, and the virtuoso string and wind players were everywhere. In the second movement, the strings sang lushly, and Boskovsky's violin solo was as beautiful as ever. The original broadcast recording of this historic concert is still missing, and previously only a poor-quality disc was available, but Epitaph has finally released a CD with the best sound quality! The coupling margins include the overture to "Leonore" No. 2 from Hamburg in June, which is recorded between Berlin in May and Salzburg in August in the maestro's discography. The performance is famous for its stormy atmosphere, and although some noise remains in the recording, the low midrange is thick and the intensity is perfect. The CD is a rare and currently unavailable treasure, having only been released on CD by the French Furtwängler Society and Disk Lefranc. The recording was made for broadcast purposes and is less than 4 minutes long, beginning with the backstage trumpets as they enter the coda. Toward the end, Furtwängler applies a furious accelerando, and the Berlin Philharmonic cannot keep up with the conductor, and the ensemble is partially out of order. It reminds me of the confusion and excitement at the finale and ending of the rehearsal of the "Ninth at Bayreuth" (July 29, 1951).The CD has been carefully remastered using the latest technology and is now available in UHQCD, the "definitive high sound quality CD"! The booklet commentary is by Mr. Usuke Nakagawa, well-known for "Karajan to Furtwängler" (Karajan and Furtwängler) (Gentosha Shinsho), etc. "How did Furtwängler come back (tentative title)?
