The German Requiem, Brahms' masterpiece, depicts the "prayer" of mankind that transcends religious frameworks and is shared with Bach's "Mass in B minor" and Beethoven's "Missa solemnis". It is said that Brahms was motivated to compose the Requiem by the death of his benefactor, Robert Schumann. A few years later, he experienced the death of his beloved mother, and the composition progressed rapidly, with the first performance of the entire work taking place on February 18, 1869, after a partial premiere. The Requiem, a mass for the dead, is usually in Latin, as it is the liturgical text of the Mass in the Catholic Church.However, Brahms, a Protestant Lutheran, used selected words from the German version of the Lutheran Bible as the lyrics. Therefore, "Deutsches Requiem" is not liturgical music, but it is an expression of Brahms' deep faith as a devout Protestant. The two soloists for this performance are Elsa Dreisig, who performed Fiordiligi in "Cosi fan d'utte" at the Salzburg Festival in 2020, and Michael Foret, who has a strong presence and powerful singing voice.
