Harmonia Mundi’s Beethoven Year Series The final installment of the complete Beethoven symphony recording project is here! The Berlin Academy of Early Music presents Symphonies Nos. 4 and 8—the final installment of the Beethoven Year Series’ symphony collection released by Harmonia Mundi! As with previous symphony releases, this volume also features works by contemporary composers as companion pieces. This time, works by Cherubini (1760–1842) and Méhul (1763–1817) have been selected. This release allows you to fully enjoy the Berlin Academy of Early Music’s artistry and the superb quality of the recording. In Beethoven’s Symphony No. 4, the final movement features the bassoon’s staccato passages—a pinnacle of virtuosity—performed flawlessly without the slightest misstep. The rich resonance of the timpani also lingers in the listener’s ears (the timpanist is Francisco Manuel Angus Rodríguez, born in Seville in 1990, who became principal timpanist at a young age. He studied at Toho Gakuen at the invitation of Keiko Abe; after a successful career at the Berlin State Opera, he also performed at the Bayreuth Festival). The lightness, almost like a dance, created by the fast tempo of the first movement of Symphony No. 8 is also surprising. Following that first movement, the metronomic rhythm of the second movement also resonates with great effect. Cherubini’s opera *Rodolisa* premiered in Paris in 1791. It was a huge success, reportedly staged more than 200 times at the time. The story follows a pair of lovers torn apart by the father, who are eventually happily reunited after enduring various hardships, trials, and misunderstandings; however, rather than foreshadowing the opera’s plot, the overture is written in a style more reminiscent of a symphony. This work by Meyneur—who was also a friend of Cherubini—has sometimes been described by Schumann and others as a “response to Beethoven’s Symphony No. 5” (partly because the rhythm of the final movement resembles that of the “Fate” Symphony), but it is unclear today just how familiar he was with the Fifth Symphony (composed in 1808) while he was working on this symphony. Rather, this is an opportunity to celebrate the fact that such a magnificent symphony existed during the French Revolution, that it left a significant mark on subsequent French orchestral composition, and that the Berlin Academy of Early Music has produced a definitive new recording.
