Sharon Bezaly's landmark 50th disc celebrates the "synergy" she creates alongside a distinguished line-up of colleagues including Michala Petri, Michael Collins and Walter Auer. A rich and varied programme, crowned by Mahler's suite after Bach's orchestral works. Hybrid SACD. Founded in 1973, the BIS label celebrates its 50th anniversary in 2023. This release marks the 50th album by the flautist Sharon Bezaly, and its theme is the "synergy" that arises from playing alongside outstanding partners such as Michala Petri, Michael Collins and Walter Auer. The programme is remarkably varied, taking in Telemann, Saint-Saëns, Franz Doppler, Villa-Lobos and Mahler's Suite from the Orchestral Works of J.S. Bach. In the Telemann concerto Bezaly and Petri – the reigning queen of the recorder – strike up a wonderfully finely tuned partnership. Saint-Saëns's Tarantelle is an early work in which flute and clarinet are intertwined throughout; the give-and-take between Bezaly and Michael Collins is one of the disc's delights. For Franz Doppler's Concerto for two flutes and orchestra (arr. Adorján) Bezaly is joined by Walter Auer, principal flute of the Vienna Philharmonic. Auer takes the first flute part up to the middle of the second movement, after which Bezaly takes over. Two masters here seem to relish the conversation in a work that showcases brilliant passagework and the sheer beauty of the flute. Villa-Lobos's Bachianas Brasileiras – literally "Bach in the Brazilian manner" – comprises nine works, at once a tribute to Bach and an attempt to bring the Baroque suite into the modern age. No. 6, scored for flute and bassoon, draws its appeal from the contrast between the two instruments' very different timbres. The programme closes with Mahler's Suite from the Orchestral Works of J.S. Bach, a four-movement reworking of material from the Orchestral Suites Nos. 2 and 3. It has the weight of a modern orchestra, yet the continuo is taken by harpsichord and organ. Mahler picks the choicest movements: the Ouverture and Rondeau–Badinerie from No. 2, and the celebrated Air and Gavotte from No. 3.
