Description:
Featuring two masters—Steier and Diertiens—and Beethoven’s Bagatelle performed as a solo by Steier! Harmonia Mundi’s ongoing Beethoven Year series continues with the release of a highly anticipated new album by Steier and Deertiens featuring cello sonatas and a bagatelle (performed as a solo by Steier)! Cellist Roel Deeltiens is the founder of Ensemble Exploratio and an authority on both Baroque and modern music, having served as a judge for world-renowned competitions such as the Tchaikovsky Competition and the Leipzig Bach Competition. Steier is also a renowned contemporary master who brings his own unique musicality to the fortepiano, harpsichord, and, at times, the modern piano. This is a highly anticipated collaboration. Both Cello Sonatas, Op. 102, were composed in 1815 within a short span of time. This was a period when Beethoven was exploring his late style, resulting in works with a strong fantastical and meditative quality that broke away from the conventional framework of the sonata. Deertiens and Steier present an ensemble performance brimming with fantasy. The Bagatelles, Op. 119, are a collection of pieces compiled between 1820 and 1822. Although each piece is short, this performance is astonishing in how it reveals such a deep world and a wide range of expressions within them. And at times, there are surprising twists characteristic of Steier that never fail to delight. The sense of fulfillment after listening to each piece is immense. As for Op. 126, written in 1823–24—the same period as the Ninth Symphony and the *Missa Solemnis*—this collection is often referred to as “sketches for (late) string quartets” and seems to condense the very essence of Beethoven’s late masterpieces. Steyer weaves these works together with a performance brimming with fantasy and song that even foreshadows the Romantic era. These important masterpieces—composed as Beethoven transitioned from his middle to late period, striving to break free from the shackles of “established forms”—have been brought back to life in the finest possible form by these two virtuosos.
