Haydn’s 26th Collection, performed by the Heidelberg Symphony Orchestra led by Johannes Krump, features four works composed around 1760–1761! The Heidelberg Symphony Orchestra’s complete recording series of Haydn’s symphonies features a refreshing period-instrument approach that is simply irresistible. In the special feature “500 Masterpieces and Master Recordings of a New Era” in *Record Arts* magazine, the orchestra’s performances of Haydn’s Symphony No. 88, No. 92 “Oxford,” No. 94 “Surprise,” No. 102, and No. 104 “London” were selected as No. 1 in the special feature “500 Masterpieces and Master Recordings of a New Era” by *Record Arts* magazine, drawing attention for their rich expressiveness and high standard of performance. Recording for this series had been progressing under the leadership of the visionary Thomas Fai, but it was halted in 2014 when he suffered serious injuries after falling at home. Recording resumed in 2016 under the baton of Benjamin Spielner, and Johannes Krump was appointed as the new music director for the 2020–2021 season. Volume 26, following Volume 25, features four symphonies composed around 1760–1761, before Haydn’s time at the Esterházy Palace. Please enjoy this “journey with Haydn” from his time in the service of Count Morzin up to the period just before his tenure at the Esterházy Palace. Krump has stated, “The reality is that Haydn’s early works are rarely performed, and even we musicians are largely unfamiliar with them. These early works are brimming with Haydn’s originality and bring us great joy.” With this sentiment in mind, our orchestra—now under the leadership of our new music director—is performing these early symphonies! The domestic edition (KKC-6544) includes a Japanese booklet with commentary by Yuichi Yazaki, violist with the Heidelberg Symphony Orchestra. King International
