Schubert’s astonishing final grand sonata, in which beautiful melodies and subtle modulations emerge like a ray of light! A collection of Schubert’s works recorded on an exquisite replica of an 1826 fortepiano crafted by Konrad Graf (1782–1851), the renowned Viennese master artisan hailed as the finest fortepiano maker of his time, whose sound captivated many celebrated composers. This replica was crafted by Christopher Clark (1947–), who has been designated a “Living National Treasure” by the French government, and is a truly magnificent instrument that superbly reflects the characteristics of the original. Fortepiano performer Ayako Ito had the opportunity to play both the original and the replica of this instrument while a student at the Royal Conservatory of Antwerp, and, captivated by their splendor, she nurtured the dream of “one day recording a CD with them.” This long-awaited CD recording, which has now become a reality, also marks her debut on the Challenge Classics label. Her performance, which fully brings out the instrument’s delicacy and power, resonates beautifully with the music of Schubert—a composer who lived in Vienna—unfolding a world filled with a new light unlike anything heard before. The instrument is equipped with four pedals (sustain, una corda, moderato, and fagotto); the moderato pedal, in particular, produces a dreamy, soft tone and creates a wonderful effect at just the right moments. [Ayako Ito] Born in Tokyo. Graduated from the Faculty of Music at Toho Gakuen School of Music. She studied modern piano in Paris under Theodor Paraschivesco and historical piano (fortepiano) at the Royal Conservatory of Antwerp in Belgium under Jos van Immaels. In 2002, she graduated from the master’s program with the highest honors in fortepiano and chamber music, and subsequently served as a visiting lecturer in the fortepiano department at her alma mater for three years.
