2010 Concert Commemorating the 150th Anniversary of Mahler’s Birth Renowned baritone Kvasthof sings “Song of a Dead Child” Zubin Mehta conducts the Staatskapelle Dresden Live footage from a 2010 concert in Dresden featuring the Staatskapelle Dresden conducted by Zubin Mehta, commemorating the 150th anniversary of Mahler’s birth. Featuring Thomas Quasthoff—one of the world’s greatest baritones—as soloist, the concert featured a performance of Mahler’s “Song of a Dead Child.” “Songs on the Death of Children” is based on the poems of the same name by Friedrich Rückert, a masterpiece in which Mahler selected five poems from a collection of 425 that chronicled the poet’s emotions following the successive deaths of his two children in the winter of 1833. Kvasthoff sang with rich, nuanced emotion, delivering a moving and masterful performance. The first half featured Webern’s *Six Pieces for Orchestra*. This work was also written in response to the death of Webern’s own mother, and the fourth movement was composed as a funeral march. The main work in the second half is Richard Strauss’s symphonic poem *Thus Spoke Zarathustra*, said to have been inspired by the writings of Nietzsche.
