Tchaikovsky’s Opera *The Queen of Spades* Jansons & the Vienna Philharmonic 2018 Salzburg Festival! A new production by the visionary Hans Neuenfels! Footage from the August 2018 Salzburg Festival. Tchaikovsky’s *The Queen of Spades*, in a new production by Hans Neuenfels, was performed by the Vienna Philharmonic under the baton of Jansons. Given that Jansons received rave reviews for conducting the same production at the Dutch National Opera in 2016, this performance is not to be missed. The production was directed by Hans Neuenfels, one of contemporary Germany’s most visionary and unconventional directors. Known for his radical productions—such as his controversial *Lohengrin* (2012) at the Bayreuth Festival—this performance was also highly anticipated. The original work is “The Queen of Spades” by Russia’s national poet, Pushkin. Set in 18th-century aristocratic society, the novel depicts the downfall of German, a guard officer, who ruins himself through gambling. Tchaikovsky’s brother Modest wrote the libretto, and Tchaikovsky himself refined it into a more dramatic opera. Although Neuenfels’s production features an avant-garde setting, it surprisingly remains faithful to the music, allowing the excellence of the singers and the orchestra to shine through. Jovanović’s performance as German is overwhelming, offering a tragic, passionate portrayal and breathtaking vocals. The male cast also delivers standout performances, including Eretsky as Golovatchenko, Tomsky as Slimsky, and Chekalinsky as Kravets. Furthermore, the Countess, played by the highly experienced Hanna Schwarz, commands a strong stage presence. Although concerns have been raised about Jansson’s current health, he masterfully conducted this three-hour opera, delivering a magnificent performance that brought out Tchaikovsky’s sweet melodies through the Vienna Philharmonic’s beautiful, serene sound.
