The fifth release on the PENTATONE label, featuring the Luxembourg Philharmonic led by Gustavo Jimeno—the young conductor currently attracting the most attention worldwide—is a Stravinsky album! Jimeno was appointed principal percussionist of the Royal Concertgebouw Orchestra in 2001. He subsequently studied conducting to further his musical development and has emerged as one of the foremost young musicians of his generation. During the 2012–13 season, 2013–14, he served as assistant conductor to Mariss Jansons at the Royal Concertgebouw Orchestra. In January 2014, he made his Concertgebouw debut as Jansons’s substitute, instantly gaining worldwide attention as a conductor. His Japanese debut as a conductor took place in September 2013 with the Sendai Philharmonic, and he subsequently visited Japan twice in 2015. His November 2015 tour of Japan with the Royal Concertgebouw Orchestra was a resounding success, cementing his reputation in the Japanese music world. Stravinsky, a composer of great anticipation. From the opening “The Rite of Spring,” he delivers a performance that is astonishingly dense and filled with tension, featuring intense rhythms and stimulating dissonances. In addition, the program features the long-lost, legendary work *Funeral Song* (revived on December 2, 2016, by the Mariinsky Theatre Orchestra under the baton of Gergiev); *The Card Game*, a work commissioned by the American Ballet Theatre that likens a three-round card game to a dance, with the dancers portrayed as playing cards; *Card Game*, a work commissioned by Paul Sacher, founder of the Basel Chamber Orchestra; the *Basel Concerto*; and *Agon*, an abstract ballet for twelve dancers set to melodies from a 17th-century French collection of dance pieces.
