Masaaki Suzuki and Yuto Suzuki—the premier father-son duo in early music today—have taken on the challenge of performing Bach’s concertos for two harpsichords. Although only three of Bach’s concertos for two harpsichords survive today, this recording includes the complete set. Since No. 1 is an arrangement of the “Concerto for Oboe and Violin” and No. 3 is an arrangement of the “Concerto for Two Violins”—both masterpieces—the familiar melodies unfold with a sense of warmth and approachability. The performance by the Suzuki father and son is filled with astonishing intensity and depth, possessing a magical quality that captivates the listener in the blink of an eye. Even more intriguing is the two-harpsichord version of Orchestral Suite No. 1, arranged by Yuto Suzuki.
