Description:
Highlight of Mozart Week 2015: “David’s Repentance” A much-talked-about collaboration between equestrian artist Baltabas and Minkowski! Mozart Week is a music festival that has been held every January since 1956, around the time of Mozart’s birthday. The highlight of the 2015 festival was a performance that generated significant buzz: a collaboration between Marc Minkowski and the team from the equestrian academy founded in 2003 by Mr. Baltabas—founder of the equestrian troupe “Zingaro” (Gypsies)—in the Grand Stables of the Palace of Versailles. At the Versailles Equestrian Academy, training incorporates not only equestrian skills but also fencing, dance, singing, and archery; their shows are renowned for their highly artistic performances in which horse and rider become one. The tack is provided by Hermès, and the company collaborates with world-class musicians, performing not only in Europe but also in Japan. The main program in this video is the cantata “David’s Repentance.” Mozart composed this cantata for the Vienna Society of Musicians, of which he had long hoped to become a member. However, the busy Mozart did not have enough time to meet the deadline, so he had no choice but to adapt his “Great Mass” K. 427, setting it to Italian lyrics (attributed to Da Ponte) and submitting it by writing the new text directly into the score of the “Great Mass.” Minkowski had long been a fan of “Zingaro” performances and took a keen interest in them; he enthusiastically persuaded Mr. Baltabas to make this concert a reality for this Mozart Week. The venue for the performance, the “Theater for Mozart,” is the former riding school (Fersen Reitschule), so one could say it has returned to its original purpose. The production was staged to match each scene of the cantata, which consists of 10 movements. The movement, lighting, and costumes truly brought Mozart’s music to life, creating a performance that was not only visually stunning but also deeply moving and captivating. King International
