A recording that showcases the true essence of 2L! A beautiful and effective capture of the wind ensemble’s innovative and fresh sound! Nominated for the 2013 Grammy Award for Best Engineered Album The Norwegian Military Band, founded in 1818 and one of five professional ensembles serving in the Royal Norwegian Armed Forces, has recorded a new album. The album title, *The Triumphal Way*, refers to a straight road lined with historic buildings and monuments that runs westward from the center of Paris, the capital of France—also known as the “Historical Axis of Paris” or the “King’s Road.” The program features French music from the 19th and 20th centuries. Berlioz’s *Grand Symphonie funèbre et triomphale*, commissioned by the French government to commemorate the 10th anniversary of the July Revolution of 1830. The program brings together works featuring the fresh ideas and sounds of wind ensemble music—said to have ushered in a new era following the French Revolution of 1791—including a piece by Saint-Saëns that, as the title suggests, was inspired by “the contrast between the Eastern and Western worlds.” Conductor Ole Christian Rude has served as music director of the Norwegian Military Band since 2006. The recording sessions for this album took place at Jarl Church in Bærum, built in 1961, which features a steeply sloped ceiling constructed of natural wood that produces wonderful acoustics; it is one of the 2L staff’s favorite recording locations.
