Vladimir Sofronitsky (1901–1961) was a legendary pianist of the former Soviet Union whom Richter and Gilelis revered deeply. He received an ideal education: he was thoroughly taught the tradition by Michalowski, a grand-pupil of Chopin, at the Warsaw Conservatory, and later perfected his Russian pianism under Leonid Nikolaev at the Petrograd Conservatory. He later married Scriabin’s eldest daughter and was regarded as the foremost interpreter of his father-in-law’s works. From the “MelodiyaxObsession” series—which reissues out-of-print and hard-to-find Melodiya masterpieces and rare Melodiya recordings—we are releasing this hard-to-find treasure of his on a 2-CD set. With the exception of Prokofiev’s Tales of an Old Grandmother, these are all live recordings, and most were made during the very final years of his life (May 13, 1960, at the Small Hall of the Moscow Conservatory)—making them invaluable recordings. His poetic beauty and mysterious atmosphere are truly one-of-a-kind, and his interpretations of Chopin, Schubert, and the dreamlike Scriabin are exquisite. This is the ultimate example of Soviet piano artistry—one that captivated Richter and Gilelis and was highly praised by Neigaus.
