From the “MelodiyaxObsession” series—which reissues out-of-print and hard-to-find Melodiya masterpieces and rare Melodiya recordings—Eugene Mogilevsky’s legendary performance of “Rachmaninoff: Piano Concerto No. 3” with Kondrashin makes its long-awaited return! Although Mogilevsky had the potential to become a master, he passed away suddenly and tragically in 2023 without having achieved the level of success he had hoped for. A true prodigy, he was the great-uncle of Alexander Mogilevsky—the mentor of Neiko Suwa and a benefactor of the Japanese violin world—and studied under Heinrich Neigaus and Yakov Zak. At the age of 18, he won the Queen Elisabeth International Music Competition. His performance of Rachmaninoff’s Piano Concerto No. 3 at that competition garnered such acclaim that it is said Richter chose not to tackle the piece himself, declaring, “No one can play it better than Mogilevsky.” This recording, made in a studio session shortly afterward, was released in Japan as early as the LP era and received rave reviews from many critics. Aside from the staggering technique and volume characteristic of orthodox Russian pianism, he displayed a maturity—including restrained, subdued emotion and occasional flashes of demonic intensity—unthinkable for a 19-year-old. This landmark recording, which many still consider the finest performance of the piece, had long been awaited for reissue. Rachmaninoff’s Piano Concerto No. 3 is demanding not only for the pianist but also for the orchestra, requiring an exceptional conductor. Here, Kondrashin stays perfectly in sync with the pianist, and his ability to bring out the full lyrical expression at key moments is exquisite. The skill of the Moscow Philharmonic is also worth special mention. Prokofiev’s Piano Sonata No. 8, one of the “War Sonatas” recorded in 1977, is also a thoroughly satisfying performance.
