Melodiya x Obsession," a series of reissues of Melodiya's classic recordings and rare Melodiya recordings that have become obsolete or difficult to obtain, presents the complete Beethoven cello sonatas by the famous cellist from the former Soviet Union, Daniil Shafran. Shafran learned cello from his father, the principal cellist of the Leningrad Philharmonic Orchestra, and at the age of 11 he performed Tchaikovsky's "Variations on a Rococo Theme" with the orchestra. At the age of 14, he won the All-Union Competition and was presented with a 1630 Amati, which he played for the rest of his life. Beethoven's Cello Sonata has been likened to the "New Testament of the cello. The first and second sonatas, written in an unusual two-movement form, are followed by the third, which became one of the most representative chamber pieces of Beethoven's middle period, and the fourth and fifth, which move toward Romantic music.
