Description:
A collection of piano works by Jānis Medīņš, presented by Latvian pianist Reinis Zariņš. Jānis Medins was born in 1890 in Riga, the capital of Latvia. He studied piano, violin, and cello at the Riga Music School and began his career as a violinist with the Riga Latvian Society Orchestra and a violist with the Latvian Opera Orchestra. He also began composing around this time. During World War I, he served as conductor of an army orchestra. Upon returning from Siberia, where he spent the final years of the war, he conducted the Riga Radio Orchestra from 1928 to 1944 and contributed to the development of Latvian musical culture by composing Latvia’s first opera and piano concerto. In 1944, when Latvia came under Soviet occupation, he fled to Germany with his family to protect himself and his artistic freedom. In 1948, he moved to Stockholm, Sweden. He continued composing, focusing primarily on chamber music, and passed away in Stockholm in 1966. Medins’ style is recognized as drawing on the influences of Richard Strauss and Wagner, the harmonies of French Impressionism, and the colors and harmonic language of Latvian folk music. “Daina No. 6,” “Daina No. 14,” and “Daina No. 17” are short pieces modeled after the ancient Latvian folk song “Daina.” The *Sonatina* is a three-movement work. It features an “Allegro moderato” rooted in Impressionist mood and “Latvian” traditions, a “Moderato assai” with a theme based on church modes, and a rhythmic and humorous “Allegro moderato” based on the baroque style. The “Aria” from the First Orchestral Suite features a beautiful melody symbolizing the “lost homeland” of those who have left Latvia, and was arranged for piano by Zariņš. Reinis Zariņš (b. 1985) first encountered Medins’ music in 2010 when he was selected as the soloist for Medins’ “Piano Concerto,” one of the events commemorating the 120th anniversary of the Latvian National Opera. The concerto, which features passages reminiscent of Rachmaninoff, is a three-movement work consisting of “Allegro moderato,” “Lento,” and “Allegro.” Since only the manuscript score existed, Zalinš reportedly struggled to complete the piece. She also performed this concerto at the 2022 Latvian Independence Day concert. The Liepāja Symphony Orchestra and Kaspars Adamson, who performed with her on that occasion, participate in this recording. Tokyo M Plus
