The Latvian National Choir has been in existence for more than 75 years. Since 1997, Maris Šilmais of Latvia has served as its artistic director and chief conductor; in addition to concerts featuring a cappella works, the choir has performed large-scale works with internationally renowned orchestras. Along with the Latvian Radio Choir, it ranks among Europe’s leading choral ensembles. In 2018, as the Republic of Latvia celebrated its 100th anniversary of independence, the Latvian National Choir and Širmais launched a project to create a new “Latvian song” that could be sung by both professional and amateur singers. They commissioned works from 77 musicians representing a diverse range of genres and styles, including members of the youngest generation. The pieces—composed around one of the themes “Fire, Water, Earth, Sky, or Love”—were performed during five concerts held over the course of three years in the hall of the National Library.
