Lin Sheng-shang’s debut film score. A blend of folk, jazz, enka, and surf music adds color to a human drama tinged with both humor and melancholy. Winner of the Golden Horse Award and the Taipei Film Festival. Lin Sheng-xiang is a singer-songwriter and music producer from Meinong District, Kaohsiung City, Taiwan. He is known as an artist who, while carrying on the poetic spirit of traditional narrative songs, infuses his music with his perspective on society and his homeland. With Hakka culture as his roots, he has been influenced by music from around the world—including Europe, the United States, Okinawa, Cuba, and West Africa. By incorporating elements of traditional instruments such as the yueqin and sanxian, and using the “six-string yueqin” he developed himself, he has built a truly unique musical world. After serving as a central figure in “The Labor Exchange Band,” one of Taiwan’s most legendary bands, he relaunched “Shengxiang Band” in 2012. Joined by Japanese guitarist Ken Ohtake, bassist Toru Hayakawa, and drummer Noriaki Fukushima, as well as Taiwanese percussionist Wu Zhengjun and suona player Huang Boyu, the band delivers original sounds and live performances that transcend national borders and musical genres. This album, The Great Buddha+ (TheGreatBuddha+) Original Soundtrack, is a collection of film music produced and composed by Lin Sheng-xiang (Tracks 3 and 8 were composed by Toru Hayakawa). Toru Hayakawa and Ken Otake, core members of the Seisho Orchestra, perform on the album, with each track vividly depicting the film’s scenes and the emotions of its characters. However, this work is not confined to the realm of mere film music. If you listen to it without the preconceptions associated with a soundtrack, you can fully appreciate its charm as an outstanding musical work in its own right. While rooted in folk and jazz, the album boldly fuses elements of Taiwanese folk music, Japanese enka, Southeast Asian exoticism, Caribbean music, and even surf music. This approach is one rarely seen in Seishō Gakutai’s previous works, and their diverse musicality, high level of performance, and rich creativity are truly astonishing. Furthermore, this album masterfully transforms the black humor, melancholy, social satire, and humanity found in the film The Great Buddha+ into music. It has garnered high acclaim, winning the Best Music Award at the 2017 Taipei Film Festival, as well as the Best Original Film Score and Best Original Film Song awards at the 54th Golden Horse Awards.
