This selection commemorates the 80th anniversary of the birth of Russian composer Yuri Butko. It is difficult to speak of him in terms of specific style or influences, as he was neither anti-establishment nor socialist realist, neither avant-garde nor detached, and he continued to pursue his own path with an awareness of centuries of Russian artistic tradition, incorporating all manner of tastes and creating works that were truly Russian in their time. He has created a body of work that is truly Russian for its time. His talents blossomed in a variety of genres, including opera, symphony, choral music, and chamber music, and this album offers a glimpse into his diverse palette as well as the evolution of his style. One of his most famous works, "Diary of a Madman," which he wrote while still a sophomore at the Conservatory with a deep passion for Gogol's tragic and eccentric text, was heavily criticized when it was published, but after he achieved success as a composer, it became one of the classic Russian masterpieces.
