BUTSKO

Description:

This selection commemorates the 80th anniversary of the birth of Russian composer Yuri Butko. It is difficult to speak of him in terms of specific style or influences, as he was neither anti-establishment nor socialist realist, neither avant-garde nor detached, and he continued to pursue his own path with an awareness of centuries of Russian artistic tradition, incorporating all manner of tastes and creating works that were truly Russian in their time. He has created a body of work that is truly Russian for its time. His talents blossomed in a variety of genres, including opera, symphony, choral music, and chamber music, and this album offers a glimpse into his diverse palette as well as the evolution of his style. One of his most famous works, "Diary of a Madman," which he wrote while still a sophomore at the Conservatory with a deep passion for Gogol's tragic and eccentric text, was heavily criticized when it was published, but after he achieved success as a composer, it became one of the classic Russian masterpieces. The Chamber Symphony No. 3, 3rd Mov. The third movement of Chamber Symphony No. 3, "Lacrimosa," was dedicated to the Luikov family (a family that shunned the Soviet government as anti-religious and lived in isolated seclusion deep in the mountains for over 40 years), who were greatly shocked when they were discovered in the 1970s and secretly dedicated it to them.Chant (Canon) to the Overbearing Angels, Commanders, and Patrons" is one of Butzko's last works, an oratorio named after one of the Orthodox chants and prayers, the "Rule (Canon)". It uses an old text about the repentance of an emperor whose reign of terror was historic and who was held captive in his later years. Naxos Japan
