This historic recording of J.S. Bach's "John Passion" was first performed by domestic musicians in 1981 during the period of the former Soviet Union, and was recorded by the Leningrad Chamber Orchestra of Old and Modern Music (now called the St. Petersburg State Academy Symphony Orchestra), founded in 1967 by Carl Eliasberg and Nikolai Rabinovich. The three singers who were taught by Alexander Sveshnikov, a famous choral conductor in the Soviet Union at that time, took charge of the soloists, and the chorus he founded also participated in the performance. In effect, this performance is a tribute to Sveshnikov, who passed away in 1980. The Bach performed by the best performers of the time in the Soviet Union has a surprisingly refined interpretation and power, and the clear sound of the boys' chorus is beautiful and different from the recent performances using period techniques.
