Takako Onishi, a baritone singer who has received rave reviews at opera houses and music festivals in Europe and the United States and enjoys immense popularity in Japan through her numerous opera and concert appearances, is finally releasing a CD. Featuring piano accompaniment by Michio Kobayashi—a legend in the Japanese music world who has performed with numerous legendary singers such as Fischer-Dieskau and Hermann Prey—Onishi’s fresh sensibility and Kobayashi’s deep insight will open up a new world of German art songs. Their collaboration began at the 30th Nippon Steel Music Awards in 2019, where Onishi received the Fresh Artist Award and Kobayashi was awarded the Special Prize. Since then, the two have meticulously crafted the program together, and after numerous rehearsals, this recording was finally realized. The program features a collection of traditional German art songs. This album represents a particularly valuable recording of works by Beethoven—rarely performed—and Schoenberg—for whom there are few existing recordings on CD or other media. The liner notes were written exclusively for this release by Ichiro Nohira. His performance analysis and song commentary, explored from his sharp perspective as both a composer and pianist, are a must-read. King International
