Yoichi Tajiri
Description:
The eagerly awaited second volume in the live recording series from the uncompromising pianist Yoichi Tajiri. A newly unearthed performance of Beethoven's Symphony No. 3 "Eroica", coupled with previously issued overtures. Released following meticulous remastering. After graduating from the Toho Gakuen School of Music, Yoichi Tajiri went on to study as the only pupil of Idil Biret. Since 1996 he has pursued a distinctive path built around complete cycles devoted to individual composers, and from 2000 onwards he has incorporated his own solo arrangements of orchestral works into his programmes, establishing a genre of his own. Beethoven's Symphony No. 3 "Eroica" and the Coriolan and Egmont overtures presented here were recorded live during Tajiri's cycle of the complete Beethoven symphonies given between 2011 and 2012. The Third Symphony appears here for the first time, while the overtures use the same source as the 2020 release on OTTAVA RECORDS (OTTAVA-10004, now deleted). For this reissue, the celebrated recording engineer Atsuo Fujita has carried out painstaking remastering, removing extraneous hall noise as far as possible. In the liner notes, Tajiri writes of his performance of the Third Symphony: "... In this work the energy rises unbroken towards the finale, yet even this trance-like state is never fanatical; it belongs to a world that is in a certain sense healthy and moral. Within music of overwhelming exaltation there lies a sound and wholesome spirit. This, I feel, is the true strength of Beethoven's art." Yoichi Tajiri (piano) After graduating from the Toho Gakuen School of Music he continued his studies in Europe, training as the sole pupil of Idil Biret. He has attracted international attention through a succession of composer cycles, including complete recital cycles of the piano sonatas of Beethoven, Mozart and Brahms and of the complete piano works of Schumann. In his own original solo arrangements of orchestral music he has completed cycles of the complete symphonies of Beethoven and Brahms, and his repertoire also includes the "Unfinished", the "New World" and the "Pathétique" among many others. He has likewise arranged and performed a large number of piano concertos, opera overtures, chamber works and songs by Beethoven, Mozart, Chopin, Schumann, Brahms and others for solo piano. His work is highly regarded by Steinway's Hamburg headquarters, which has awarded him the title of Steinway Artist. King International
