The strikingly stylish and artistic female piano duo piaNA presents its long-awaited collection of Kapustin's works for piano four hands. piaNA, the duo to whom Kapustin dedicated two new works, has completed an album of music for piano four hands that includes the world premiere recordings of those pieces. The liner notes feature a contribution from Hayato Sumino, better known as the hugely popular YouTube pianist Cateen. Nikolai Kapustin (1937-2020) was a Ukrainian-born composer and pianist. While studying at the Moscow Conservatory he became fascinated by the American jazz he heard on the radio, and went on to develop a personal idiom that grafted jazz elements onto a classical foundation. piaNA, who had long championed Kapustin's music in concert, were honoured with the dedication of two works by the composer himself. Kapustin sadly passed away last year. Natsuki Nishimoto studied classical music in Spain and commands a repertoire ranging from the classics to the present day. A frequent prizewinner in competitions, she recently released an album of works by the Spanish composer Pascual Gimeno. Asuka Sakuma competed successfully in numerous competitions in Europe and Japan from childhood, then turned for a time to jazz and pop before returning to classical music, bringing that experience with her. The recordings were made in October and December 2020, under careful COVID-19 precautions, with the master engineer Akira Fukada capturing sound of exceptional transparency. From immediately after its formation in 2010 the duo has performed to acclaim not only in Japan but throughout Europe. In 2012 it released "piaNA plays Kapustin", an album devoted entirely to the four-hand works of the Russian composer Nikolai Kapustin, on the French Artist Label. That same year Kapustin dedicated two piano duo works to piaNA, "Three for Two, Op. 145" and "Capriccio, Op. 146", making them the only piano duo in the world to have received a dedication from the composer.
