Perhaps because the band had adopted a policy of not including singles on their albums—and “I Want to Hold Your Hand” was notably absent—the album is often perceived as surprisingly understated. However, the album’s content is packed with highlights, led by “It Won’t Be Long”—which showcases the Beatles’ signature call-and-response harmonies—along with tracks featuring John’s razor-sharp vocals, Paul’s breakthrough song “All My Loving,” George’s first original composition “Don’t Bother Me,” and “I Wanna Be Your Man”—a song Ringo sang that was originally written for the Rolling Stones—it’s packed with highlights. Making full use of overdubs such as piano and handclaps, this is a masterpiece that represents a significant leap forward in both production and musical quality. In line with the production policies of the time, the “mono mix” was the standard until 2009, while the “stereo mix”—in which instruments are clearly separated between the left and right channels—was first released on CD in 2009. For fans, this “parting stereo mix” was the only downside. It’s true that the mono recordings from that era are by far superior. However, the stereo mix—where the instruments spread across the left and right channels—holds great value. This time, using a new master, we’ve achieved a stereo mix befitting the 21st century, with “each instrument positioned in a well-balanced manner across the left and right channels.” Including a rare version of the related single “I Want to Hold You” (B-side: “This Boy”), as well as various sessions and outtakes, this is the ultimate “With the Beatles Sessions” collection.
