Rare live performance at the oldest British rock festival, plus Cream's oldest club gig in '66. Legendary supergroup Cream. The album includes two live performances, one at Barbecue 67, which is said to be the first rock festival in the U.K., and the other at Crooks Creek in 1966, which is said to be Cream's oldest surviving live recording. The band played a number of live stages in 1967, where they could demonstrate their outstanding performance skills. The band's debut in late 1966 was followed by the hit "Colorful Cream" and its huge success in the U.S. The live performances recorded here are from the early days of the band's career. The first performance was on May 29, 1967 in Lincolnshire, England, at the "Barbecue 67," which is said to be a fantastic rock festival. The "Monterey Pop Festival" held in June 1967 is famous as the world's first rock festival, but the "Barbecue 67" was held two weeks earlier. The headliner was the Jimi Hendrix Experience, who was the talk of the town throughout the UK. Other acts included Pink Floyd led by Syd Barrett, Move, etc. The 6,000-capacity venue was overflowing outside, with crowds pouring in from as far away as London. The festival was held for one year only, due to opposition from the local community, and was soon forgotten in the annals of rock history. Miraculously, however, only Cream's live recordings have survived. The stage was set up in a tulip bulb auction market. The jacket of this CD features a recently unearthed photo of the show, and its simplicity is astonishing. The sound system is weak and the vocals are a bit off, but Clapton's guitar and G. Baker's drums are clearly captured, and the firey guitar solo from Clapton's psychedelic painted SG guitar is a must for the audience. The band has already performed songs from "Colorful Cream" such as "Sunshine Of Your Love," and you can feel the band's characteristics in their intense ad-lib performance.Also included is the oldest surviving live recording of Cream, recorded at the venerable Crooks Creek in northwest London. This is the time when Cream, just after its formation, was still performing simply at the club, which was frequented by jazz, blues, and rock musicians of the time, including John Mayall, Ginger Baker, Jack Bruce, Eric Clapton, and others. The needle noise can be heard at times, but this is due to the fact that the source recorded on the acetate at the time is the master, and it is the only one that exists. The guitar solo at the end of "Sweet Wine" is so intense that the guitarist plays one note for more than 40 seconds.
