Description:
[Rattle’s Third “Resurrection”—Aiming for New Heights!] “Das Lied von der Erde” (January 2018), Symphony No. 9 (2021), Symphony No. 6 (September 2023), and Symphony No. 7 (November 2024)—the fifth installment in the Mahler cycle featuring Rattle and the Bavarian Radio Symphony Orchestra is *Resurrection*. This is the piece that inspired Rattle to become a conductor when he first heard it performed at the age of 12. He has recorded it with the City of Birmingham Symphony Orchestra and the Berlin Philharmonic, where he previously served as principal conductor, and has also featured it at special events such as his farewell concert as principal conductor of the City of Birmingham Symphony Orchestra. While his interpretation is undoubtedly well-developed, here he delivers an exquisitely detailed performance that seems to reveal not only Mahler’s intricate score but also the emotions, desires, and visionary world embedded within it. In the first movement, the low strings and timpani immediately capture the listener’s attention. While maintaining a powerful sound, they apply accents with extreme agility, delineating each phrase clearly right to the very end and bringing to the fore numerous musical motifs that might otherwise have been buried. The brass section also performs with a beautiful resonance, ranging from heavenly mellowness to intense fortissimo. The performance proceeds at a somewhat brisk tempo, including the middle movement, but for the final five minutes or so, the pace slows slightly as the music is carried forward with a powerful, grounded presence, culminating in a tremendous sense of elation together with the choir. The contribution of Dijkstra, a giant in the world of choral conducting who led this choir for many years, is undoubtedly significant. The recording skillfully captures the work’s diverse details and vast sonic world without excessive reverberation, dryness, or unnatural close-ups. This achievement is the result of Rattle’s conducting prowess, the Bavarian Radio Symphony Orchestra’s musicality, the Isar Philharmonic’s acoustics, and the engineer’s skill—all of which come together uniquely in this recording.
