Consort La Capriola

Description:

[Tracing the History of the Violin’s Popularity During the Renaissance Through Venetian Masterpieces] The violin flourished as a superb solo instrument in Baroque-era Italy. This album takes us even further back in time from that period of rapid advancement, focusing on St. Mark’s Basilica in Venice—one of the musical hubs of the 16th century, when stringed instruments began to spread across the Italian Peninsula—to explore the very earliest sounds of this instrument. All the instruments used are meticulously crafted reproductions based on thorough research of Renaissance-era models, which differ in various ways from violins of the Baroque period and beyond. In keeping with the custom of the time—where instruments of the same type were gathered from the highest to the lowest registers to form a consort—the ensemble performs a variety of works written in a polyphonic style. In addition to instrumental pieces, the album features vocal works such as madrigals and motets, either performed entirely as instrumental pieces or with a single vocal part sung while the rest is performed by the consort. The album features many classic masterpieces, allowing listeners to deeply appreciate the unique character of “primitive violin music” through works by masters such as Villart and De Laure. Messa di voce, distinctive vibrato, and pizzicato can be heard throughout, allowing listeners to discern the similarities and differences between the ornamental singing techniques common in the 16th and 17th centuries and the expressive techniques of the violin family. Joining the four musicians—all graduates of the Lyon Conservatory, which has produced many masters of period instruments—is Odile Édouard, a member of Les Witches (whose many acclaimed recordings are released on ALPHA) and a renowned teacher at the same conservatory. This is an excellent project that delves into the origins of bowed string instruments. Naxos Japan
