[A Collection of Schoenberg Works by Emard: An Overview of the Evolution of His Style from Atonality to the Twelve-Tone Technique] Pierre-Laurent Emard makes his solo album debut on AlphaClassics with this collection of Schoenberg works, marking the first release in their partnership. Emard, who performed Schoenberg’s Op. 11 when he won the 1973 Olivier Messiaen International Competition, has cherished this project for many years; it has now come to fruition after more than 40 years of dedicated study. The album features five major works, ranging from Op. 11, composed in 1909, to Op. 33a/33b, his final solo piano pieces written around 1928–31 before his exile to the United States. This collection spans Schoenberg’s compositional evolution over approximately 22 years—from the stage of free atonality to the establishment of the twelve-tone technique—and while tonality is deconstructed, the works draw on structural foundations such as the influence of Brahms, Bach’s counterpoint, and classical dance forms. This album, featuring Emard—who has built a distinguished career through her 18 years with the Ensemble Intercontemporain—systematically presents the full scope of these works, which marked a turning point in 20th-century music history.
